Abstract

This paper analyzes the project of the Monument to the Third International by Vladimir Tatlin, providing a new approach from the economic, political and cultural context of his time, after the Russian Revolution of 1917. With the analysis of Tatlin’s Monument, we criticize some of traditional interpretations that several historians projected onto the Russian artistic avant-garde of the interwar period. We renounce formal, iconographic analysis and the political interpretation of the work, which are the most common study methodologies nowadays. On the contrary, in this work, we do an analysis of the material and technical conditions of the artwork, as well as their sociological dimension. The relationship of the work with the context of material scarcity, technological limitations, and progressive disenchantment of the revolutionary impulses that originally moved the artist will be analyzed with special care.
